I have a 2009 Bobcat S250 with 7-pin connector. I recently purchased a used (Melroe) Palm 7' grader attachment with raise, tilt and angle adjustment. The Palm grader appears to have a 7-pin female truck trailer connector and a used Mx7 Harley Rake with an 8-pin connector. I would like to use these attachments on my Bobcat. What additional information do you need to determine the products I need that will make these work on my machine.

Machine 2009 S250 - You have one of the last years where you can add a 14 pin kit and run directly from the machine.  When this was available, I always bought their kit and added the 14 pin.  That makes it so the stock controls will work.

Or.  You can use our harness and our controller.  You will need a new harness on each attachment to bring them up to spec.  Then you can use our controllers.

Please order our SG-CB-6014 once and you can reuse it on all of your attachments.  This will give you 6 controllable outputs plus ground and a power pin.

Grader: 

Buy a SG-BPH-14-6-9DP/DT and install in the grader.  It will directly plug into the 6014.

Harley:

Buy a SG-BPH-14-6-9DP/DT and install in the rake.  It will directly plug into the 6014.

You can either remove the Erskine Harness, install a 14 Pin harness (SG-BPH-14-6-9DP/DT) and use our SG-CB-4014 or SG-CB-6014.

You can either cut the Erskine connector off and install a 14 Pin connector (SG-BPH-14-6-9DP/DT) and use our SG-CB-4014 or SG-CB-6014.

Many people buy these attachments used and at a great price because people buy them thinking they can just plug them into whatever machine.  After they smoke the controllers, they give up and dump them on eBay for the next guy to figure out.  Well I figured these out years ago and am willing to teach you what needs to happen.  Please help us to keep the information flowing by purchasing our harnesses and controllers.  Many competitors will steal this information and try to sell you cheaper version with no support.  It has taken me decades to figure all of this out and your support is appreciated.

I get asked what harnesses is needed up to 5 times per day so to keep things easy, here is what you need.  If your machine brand is John Deere, Cat D-Series, Takeuchi, Gehl, Mustang, Case, Bobcat, Kubota, Manitou, New Holland and it uses a 14 pin electrical connector Click Here To Order.

Hydraulics:  The Bobcat dozers' have an open center valve which requires constant flow in a forward direction at all times to perform. The first thing to check is that your flow is going in the right direction.  Your standard forward pressure needs to be going into the block where the "P" is stamped and your return needs to be coming from where the letter "T" is stamped.  Once the hoses are connected correctly we can work on the electrical.  If you do not connect your hoses properly, nothing will work.

Electrical:  Each function requires a solenoid to make it operate.  There are two cartridges each with two solenoids.  I call them stacks because you can see each solenoid stacked on top of each other.  One stack handles the blade angle (Left/Right) and one stack handles the blade tilt (Left Up/Down and Right Up/Down).

Wiring Connections: These instructions are for our harnesses.  We do not support copy cat harnesses.

14 Pin Connections:  There are 6 pairs of wires on our harnesses.  This is because some manufacturers do not have all 6 buttons or they are in a different place.  By sending every harness with 6 pairs, we can cover all of the different ways that the manufacturers wire their buttons.  We always start with the primary pairs which are green and orange.  These are present in almost every machine ever tested.  Install these in your first solenoid stack.  Orange on top and green on the bottom.  Fire up your machine.  Are you happy with the function and the direction when you touch each button?  If you want the opposite reaction just put the orange on the bottom and the green on top.  Happy?  Yes, then move onto the next pair. 

This is the tougher pair.  Try white on top and pink on the bottom of the second stack.  Does it work? Yes? Are you happy with the action and direction? Yes? You are done.

No it does not work.  Try the Blue and white/black pair in the same stack.  This pair should work.  If not, you may not have the option for 4 or 6 buttons installed and should contact your dealer with your serial number to figure it out.  If you have 4 buttons, and only two work, check your output on the 14 pin with a light to see if they are working properly.

8 Pin Connections:  There are 4 pairs of wires in this harness.  For the 5th and 6th function, Cat/ASV/Terex used an extra set of hydraulics.  You will have no choices in this selection and it is what it is.  Orange and Green Pairs again to start.  Install these in your first solenoid stack.  Orange on top and green on the bottom.  Fire up your machine.  Are you happy with the function and the direction when you touch each button?  If you want the opposite reaction just put the orange on the bottom and the green on top.  Happy?  Yes, then move onto the next pair. 

Try white on top and pink on the bottom of the second stack.  Does it work? Yes? Are you happy with the action and direction? Yes? You are done. This piar uses Aux 7 and 8.  7 is on the left trigger and 8 is on the top console.  Be careful because this one locks so you have to physically center it back or your blade will slam in one direction and stick.

Bobcat® Cold Planers Explained:

Hydraulics: 

Bobcat®  attachments use the female coupler of the machine as the pressure side while most other manufacturers use the male.  It is important to make sure the flow direction is going the proper direction before you do anything else.  It is marked on the Bobcat® hydraulic block where your main supply hoses connect.  There will be a P and a T stamped in the aluminum block.  P stands for pressure, while T stands for tank or return. 

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE HOSES CONNECTED PROPERLY!

Function Controls:

There are 4 functions that need to operate plus 2 directional controls for each.  The operation explained here is common for most manufacturer’s cold planers.  You will use 4 buttons for function selection and 2 buttons for direction.  This equals 6 buttons which is the maximum amount supplied on most stock machines. You will hold 1 selection button while you push either the forward or reverse button.  This is shown on the table below.

Electrical Operation Explained:

The Bobcat® Cold Planer sometimes have 7 solenoids.  In this case, 6 are for control and 1 diverts the flow from the drum to the controls.  Others have only 6 solenoids so there is no diverter used.  The Bobcat® Canbus controller takes care of these operations.  Since our goal is to replace this controller so the attachment can be used on everything other machine besides Bobcat, we have to use a Genius Bypass Harness. 

We have two types of harnesses and they are explained here. They work with Cat D, John Deere, Case, New Holland, Kubota and other machines that use a 14 pin.

SG-BPH-14-6-9 – This is a 6 output harness that plugs directly into the solenoids and then allows you to control each solenoid directly from your machine controls.  Instructions are included to show you how to connect your machine buttons to match the desired wire control.  How you connect these wires will be personal and machine choice since the Bobcat controls are no the same as other machine controls.  Click here to purchase.

CAT D-Series machines. For Cat D-Series High Flow machines, you will still use this harness, SG-BPH-14-6-9 but you will have to establish which connectors are on the planer so you order the correct one.  Then when you receive the harness you will need to move socket G to A and H to J as well as install the high flow jumper.  This jumper is already wired inside the connector.  You just need to remove the shrink tubing and plug it into the correct location.  Socket K for XPS & N for XHP.  This will allow your high flow to switch on when using this attachment.

John Deere machines. They use Pin A instead of Pin B for ground so nothing will work without making the following change.  In your machine connector, move A to B and make your machine universal.  Please watch this video.

Grader #1 - Palm Style - Older Models and Newer 84 inch Graders.  These models have a manual side shift so they require 6 control buttons either on your sticks or on your sticks and control panel.  Before you attempt to operate these graders, you need to verify your buttons as a lot of machines ship with 2 or 4 only.  #5 and 6 are usually an option or available only on high flow machines.  Another important thing to realize is that your buttons probably do not line up to what Bobcat originally provided for this attachment.  On a Bobcat the left up down of the blade is handled with the left up/down paddle and the right up down of the blade is handled by the right paddle.  The angle is done with the left toggle.  This makes the controls very intuitive.  Cat machines are the worst.  They have a left set of buttons and then an optional right set of buttons.  Switches 5 & 6 are handled with the Aux 7 and 8 buttons.  On is on the cab headliner and the other switches between your two speed and the left trigger.  Not ideal, but it will work. Using our most basic harness, the SG-BPH-14-6-9DP/DT, you will easily be able to configure most machines.  If you need to add a laser control, you will need to add an additional switch from the cab to power the receivers and allow you to switch between manual and laser control. 

Newer Style 96" and 108" with Power Side Shift.  This is the Cadillac of graders and everyone is trying to get all of the functions to work.  Genius has come up with a kit to make these work perfectly on any machine.  First, please understand that we have had to create things that previously did not exist to make this work.  There is no magical adapter that will allow you to just plug the grader into your machine.  The grader needs 9 controls to operate.  The biggest machines only ever have 6. We had to develop a special controller with 8 momentary controls to operate all of the grader functions and two locking functions so that you can turn the laser receivers on and off. This was 2 years in the making.  We spent a lot of money and time to come up with what we believe is as close to perfection as possible.

There are three things that all machines will require to make the Bobcat Grader operate. 

1:  Bobcat Tee Harness Part #SG-BPH-GW-100.  This is no longer a Bobcat Branded harness that plugs directly into the grader controller in parallel with the 7 pin controller.  It provides you with a 14 pin plug so it can be plugged into an industry standard Deutsch connector.  We now make these ourselves because we found a better way to make them that makes them easier to install for our customers and much more reliable with side shift built into them.

2:  Genius Super Controller CLICK HERE.  This is the controller that you will mount in your cab.  It provides all of the controls you will need and then some.  Once you try this controller, you will never want to use your standard machine controls.

The first thing to check is that your flow is going in the right direction.  Your standard forward pressure needs to be going into the block where the "P" is stamped and your return needs to be coming from where the letter "T" is stamped.  Once the hoses are connected correctly you should turn on your hydraulics and see that the drum is spinning the correct direction.  If you did not connect your hoses properly, nothing will work.If that is correct, we can now work on the electrical.

Electrical:  There are 5 functions and they go like this.  Wheels up, wheels down.  Angle Left and angle right.  These are the first four functions.  We will get to the fifth in a minute.  The first four functions are handled by two sets of dual acting solenoid cartridges.  Each stack handles a set of functions.  For instance.  The first stack will handle the wheels up, wheels down by triggering either the top solenoid coil or the bottom.  The second set will trigger the angle left and angle right functions. 

The fifth function is handled by a single acting solenoid that is located by itself over by the main hose connection to the control block.  This solenoid handles the reverse operation of the drum.  Many machines do not have a 5/6 button in their cabs so we advise you to add a locking toggle switch in your cab and run a wire down to your main machine harness to add this function  That way you will not have to hold your thumb down the entire time you run the drum in reverse. 

Once you have everything wired up, you will have to turn on your hydraulics, lock them on in the forward direction and then you can operate the controls.

No it does not work.  Try the Blue and white/black pair in the same stack.  This pair should work.  If not, you may not have the option for 4 or 6 buttons installed and should contact your dealer with you serial number to figure it out.  If you have 4 buttons, and only two work, check your output on the 14 pin with a light to see if they are working properly.

If you are missing 5/6 buttons in your machine, you must wire an additional pin into your main connector on your boom for the reverse to work.

14 pin connections are for Kubota, Cat D-Series (Requires 2 pins moved), New Holland, John Deere (Requires Ground Pin Moved), Case, Gehl, Mustang, Doosan, JCB, others.  Click Here to order the correct harness.

8 Pin Connections:  There are 4 pairs of wires in this harness.  For the 5th and 6th function, Cat/ASV/Terex used an extra set of hydraulics.  You will have no choices in this selection and it is what it is.  Orange and Green Pairs again to start.  Install these in your first solenoid stack.  Orange on top and green on the bottom.  Fire up your machine.  Are you happy with the function and the direction when you touch each button?  If you want the opposite reaction just put the orange on the bottom and the green on top.  Happy?  Yes, then move onto the next pair.

Cat D-Series - You are lucky in this case because one of your selector switches will lock on which gives you the ability to run the drum in reverse.  Follow these simple steps to modify the harness for your use.  On the BPH attachment harness, follow video #100, 134 and 135 and move two sockets.  G to A and H to J.  This will allow you to use Aux 7 & 8 on your machine to control the drum.  You will use only one of these functions while the other wires are plugged into the two double stacked solenoids.  The first stack will use Green and Orange, while the second stack will use White and Red.  The single solenoids is your choice.  If you want to use the trigger on the left stick to control the drum reversal, then plug in the blue wire.  If you want to reach up and hit the Aux 8 switch on the left of the cab, then use the White/Black stripe wire.  You can then turn the switch on and off easily. Click Here to order the correct harness.

Kubota after 2018 using SSV Enhanced Controls - You are lucky in this case because one of your selector switches will lock on which gives you the ability to run the drum in reverse.  Follow these simple steps to modify the harness for your use.  On the BPH attachment harness, follow video #100, 134 and 135 and move one socket.  Move socket H to J.  This will allow you to use the enhanced locking button on your right stick on your machine to control the drum.  You will use the White with black stripe wire in the single solenoid to control the drum direction.  The first stack will use Green and Orange, while the second stack will use White and Red.  Click Here to order the correct harness.

The first thing to check is that your flow is going in the right direction.  Your standard forward pressure needs to be going into the block where the "P" is stamped and your return needs to be coming from where the letter "T" is stamped.  Once the hoses are connected correctly you will not be able to operate the drum yet.  If you set the mixer on the ground and look down to the left, you will see a small solenoid.  That solenoid is normally closed so it blocks the hydraulic flow.  You have two choices and ways of making the mixer operate.  See video #119 for instructions.

1:  Bypass this valve altogether with a #10 ORB plug.  This will bypass all of the Bobcat electrical controls and allow you to operate the mixer on any machine with no electrical.  The downside to this is that you you will not have an emergency shut-off available.  

2:  Genius has created a harness that will allow you to use the existing emergency button to turn the drum on and off.  You will still need to turn the machine on and lock the hydraulics on in the loader, but you will be able to switch the drum operation on and off.  This harness takes about 20 minutes to install and will circumvent all of the Bobcat RAC controls.

Firstly let's get it straight.  This is a Fecon Mulching head we are talking about and it is made for Bobcat.  Many people cannot understand why a regular Fecon Mulcher will work on their machine but not the Bobcat brand.  It is all about marketing.  Bobcat installs a Canbus computer on-board of the mulcher so you will not be able to run it on standard 8 pin or 14 pin controls.

In our usual fashion we have found ways to bypass their computer and make it work the way Fecon normally ships their products.

Hydraulics:  The Bobcat (Fecon) Mulchers' have an open center valve which requires constant flow in a forward direction at all times to perform. The first thing to check is that your flow is going in the right direction.  Your standard forward pressure needs to be going into the block where the "P" or "A" is stamped and your return needs to be coming from where the letter "T" or "B" is stamped.  Once the hoses are connected correctly you will not be able to operate the drum yet.  If you set the mulcher on the ground and look at the block, you will see a small solenoid.  That solenoid is normally closed so it blocks the hydraulic flow.  You have two choices and ways of making the mulcher operate. 

1:  Bypass this valve altogether.  There are two methods to do this.  If you have a cartridge that looks like this, then use our plug kit.  Start first with the PLUG KIT LINK.  If this does not work, then use the plug that looks like the solenoid that you removed. This will bypass all of the Bobcat electrical controls and allow you to operate the mulcher on any machine with no electrical.  The downside to this is that if you have the hood and you want it to operate, you will still need a bypass harness. 2:  Genius has created a harness CLICK HERE TO SEE IT  that will allow you to use the your controls to open and close the hood and have the drum spin up automatically.  This will work on all machines except for JOHN DEERE.  Why John Deere won't work? They do not supply a powered pin (Usually K) in their output harnesses, so unless you are handy and want to add one, there is no way to provide key on 12 volt constant power.   For everyone with a 14 pin harness but John Deere, you can install the following harness this way.  Unplug the two solenoids that are stacked on top of each other.  These are your hood control.  Plug the green wire connection into the top solenoid and the orange into the bottom.  This usually corresponds to your left stick up/down buttons.  For the keyed power, look inside your machines connector.  Do you see a pin in the "K" position?  If yes, then use our blue wire and move the pin internally to pin K.  Here are some instructions - CLICK HERE. 

This will be your key on power so if the drum does not turn when you turn on the hydraulics, check this connection.  If the drum works, then the hood should as well when you tap the up/down buttons on your left stick.

You will still need to turn the machine on and lock the hydraulics on in the loader, but you will be able to do anything unless the hydraulics are locked on in the forward direction.  This harness takes about 20 minutes to install and will circumvent all of the Bobcat computer controls.

JOHN DEERE OWNERS:  You will need the harness found here CLICK HERE to operate the hood if you have one.  In addition, you will need the following plug CLICK HERE.  This will allow you to run without keyed power.

Bobcat Control:

The chipper uses the RAC controller in the chipper for everything and it is connected to the Bobcat controls only using a power/ground connection as well as a CAN digital computer control.  You cannot use the controls the way they are meant to be used on any machine but a Bobcat. 

Firstly let's get it straight.  This is a Bobcat Chipper we are talking about and it is made for Bobcat.  Many people cannot understand why it just won't work on their non-Bobcat machines.  It is all about marketing.  Bobcat installs a Canbus computer on-board of the chipper so you will not be able to run it on standard 8 pin or 14 pin controls.

The following information is our method of bypassing the Bobcat controller and making the attachment universal.  This is not endorsed by Bobcat and it is completed at your own risk.

What we did to make it work is to completely by-pass the RAC controller and ran a hot wire to the two electrical switches controlling the chipper feed. In the same circuit we also ran a hot and a ground back to the main wiring to allow mechanical over electrical over hydraulic control with no computer intervention. On our ASV, the only way to get a continuous electric supply was to connect the hot wire to the cigarette lighter in the cab. In total we used about 15' of 2 strand electrical wire to basically make a pigtail providing power to the electrical switches we needed.

Please watch the full video so that you understand the process as well as the ways that we have devised to make.  You will need the Chipper harness and then a means of getting power from your machine either through the 14 pin, 8 pin, Can controller or a battery.

The first thing to check is that your flow is going in the right direction.  Your standard forward pressure needs to be going into the block where the "P" is stamped and your return needs to be coming from where the letter "T" is stamped.  Once the hoses are connected correctly you will not be able to operate the drum yet.  If you set the chipper on the ground and look at the block, you will see a small solenoid.  That solenoid is normally closed so it blocks the hydraulic flow.  You have two choices and ways of making the chipper operate. 

1:  Bypass this valve altogether with a #16 ORB Plug. This will bypass all of the Bobcat electrical controls and allow you to operate the chipper on any machine with no electrical.  The downside to this is that if you have auto feed and you want it to operate, you will still need a harness to power it.

2:  The second thing is the control harness on the Chipper.  This will work on all machines except for JOHN DEERE.  Why John Deere won't work? They do not supply a powered pin (Usually K) in their output harnesses until 2020+, so unless you are handy and want to add one, there is no way to provide key on 12 volt constant power.   For everyone with a 14 pin harness but John Deere, you can install the following harness this way.  Use pin K for power and re-pin in the connector so it will run as keyed power.

This will be your key on power so if the feeder does not turn when you turn on the hydraulics, check this connection.  If the works works, then you are good to go.

You will still need to turn the machine on and lock the hydraulics on in the loader, but you will be able to do anything unless the hydraulics are locked on in the forward direction.  This wiring takes about 20 minutes to install and will circumvent all of the Bobcat computer controls.

JOHN DEERE OWNERS:  You will need to run a keyed wire connection down to the chipper for anything to work.  This will be outside anything provided on your machine and you will do so at your own risk.  We cannot be held responsible for adding something that the manufacturer should have added in the first place.

Cat D series - You have no powered pin K.  You will use J as it is a switchable power circuit.

Hydraulics:  The Bobcat Brooms have an open center valve which requires constant flow in a forward direction at all times to perform. The first thing to check is that your flow is going in the right direction.  Your standard forward pressure needs to be going into the block where the "P" is stamped and your return needs to be coming from where the letter "T" is stamped.  Once the hoses are connected correctly we can work on the electrical.  If you do not connect your hoses properly, nothing will work.

Electrical:  Each function requires a solenoid to make it operate.  There is one cartridge each with two solenoids.  I call them stacks because you can see each solenoid stacked on top of each other.  One stack handles the attachment angle (Left/Right).

Wiring Connections: These instructions are for our harnesses.  We do not support copy cat harnesses.14 Pin Connections:  There are 6 pairs of wires on our harnesses. 

This is because some manufacturers do not have all 6 buttons or they are in a different place.  By sending every harness with 6 pairs, we can cover all of the different ways that the manufacturers wire their buttons.  We always start with the primary pairs which are green and orange.  These are present in almost every machine ever tested.  Install these in your first solenoid stack.  Orange on top and green on the bottom.  Fire up your machine.  Are you happy with the function and the direction when you touch each button?  If you want the opposite reaction just put the orange on the bottom and the green on top.  Happy?  Then you are done.

Hydraulics:  The Bobcat tree spades have a closed center valve which requires momentary flow and control in the forward and reverse direction to perform. When the Bobcat controller is installed and you push a button, the controller takes care of the flow direction.  With the controller removed you need to handle this function yourself.  This means you must perform two functions at once.  Pump control forward/reverse as well as function selection.

Example:  Opening and closing the gate.  Select the gate function and push your pump control button forward to open and backwards to close the gate. 

Electrical:  Each function requires a solenoid to make it operate.  3 spades and one gate. There is one solenoid cartridge each for a total of 4 solenoids.  Kneel down infront of the attachment and you will see them on the lower left side while looking at the machine. 

NOTE:  If your model has more than 4 solenoids, our current offering will not work.  You will require a custom control and harness.

Wiring Connections: These instructions are for our harnesses.  We do not support copy cat harnesses.

This is the tougher pair.  Try white and pink.  Does it work? Yes? Are you happy with the action and direction? Yes? You are done.

No it does not work.  Try the Blue and white/black pair in the same solenoids.  This pair should work.  If not, you may not have the option for 4 or 6 buttons installed and should contact your dealer with you serial number to figure it out.  If you have 4 buttons, and only two work, check your output on the 14 pin with a light to see if they are working properly.

Bobcat® SG60 Stump Grinder Explained:

Hydraulics: 

Bobcat®  attachments use the female coupler of the machine as the pressure side while most other manufacturers use the male.  It is important to make sure the flow direction is going the proper direction before you do anything else.  It is marked on the Bobcat® hydraulic block where your main supply hoses connect.  There will be a P and a T stamped in the aluminum block.  P stands for pressure, while T stands for tank or return. 

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE HOSES CONNECTED PROPERLY!  We continually receive calls that our harnesses do not work where the operator has failed to swap the couplers.

Function Controls:

There are 6 functions that need to operate plus 1 brake control which will not be connected.  The operation explained here is common for most manufacturer’s stump grinders.  You will use 6 control buttons for function selection in your loader.  It is up to you to verify that your machine is equipped properly.  Most modern machines have 6 buttons but in many cases they needed to have been ordered so don't count on them just being there.  These 6 buttons are the maximum amount supplied on most stock machines. You will hold in your locking hydraulic switch and allow the pump to operate continuously in the forward direction before you do anything.  If the wheel is spinning in the forward direction, you can now select your functions. The idea when setting this up is to use one 1 selection button or toggle for each function.  Use the next button or toggle for the opposite direction. This is shown as an example on the table below.

Electrical Operation Explained:

The Bobcat® Stump Grinder sometimes have 7 solenoids.  In this case, 6 are for control and 1 diverts the flow from the drum to the electric brake.  Others have only 6 solenoids so there is no diverter used.  The Bobcat® Canbus controller takes care of these operations.  Since our goal is to replace this controller so the attachment can be used on everything other machine besides Bobcat, we have to use a Genius Bypass Harness. The operational solenoids show up as three stacks of 2.  The brake is on it's own and is a single solenoid.  Do not connect anything to the brake.

The link below is for the most common 14 pin harness for this application.  It will operate on John Deere, Cat D Series, Kubota, Case, New Holland, Wacker, Old Bobcat 14 pin, etc.

Output Pin Configurations

8 Pin – Cat/ASV/Terex – 12 Volt Output – Push a button in your cab and one of the 8 pins receives 12 volts DC.  Similar to a headlight switch in your car.  Larger 12 Gage pins can take more current.  Downside is there are only 4 control circuits and two grounds.  Limits the attachments that you can control.

14 Pin – Bobcat/Kubota/New Holland/John Deere/Gehl/Mustang/Takeuchi - 12 Volt Output – Push a button in your cab and one of the 14 pins receives 12 volts DC.  Similar to a headlight switch in your car.  Smaller 14 Gage pins take less current than 8 Pin wiring.  There are a maximum of 6 control circuits and 1 ground and 1 keyed 12 volt circuits.  Most modern attachments can be controlled.

7 Pin – Bobcat Only – CAN Signal Control – Proprietary CAN Signal for Bobcat Attachments only.  Or aftermarket attachments fit with a Genius controller.  The Bobcat machine has a 7 pin connector fitted with three large pins which are power and ground.  There are four small pins of which two are not used.  The two pins that are used are CAN High and CAN Low signal pins.  The Bobcat sends control signals only when you touch a button in your cab.  This signal travels down the wire to the mating controller mounted in your attachment or the Genius controller.  The controller decodes the message and causes 12 volts to be applied to the corresponding output, which is generally connected to a control solenoid in the attachment control block.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BYPASS THE CONTROLS AND WIRE DIRECTLY OR YOU WILL BE SORRY.

It is not as simple as plugging in an adapter to your machine and then just plugging in the Bobcat attachment.  Bobcat ingeniously added a CanBus controller into every one of their attachments since 2002.  This controller only accepts control signals from your Bobcat machine.  All other machines use a simple switch which turns on 12 volts with each button push.  If you simply try to connect the two together, you will blow the controller and still nothing will ever work again.

Our current solution is to install a bypass harness into the attachment and skip the controller altogether.  Here is our guide to help you choose the correct harness.

This is inexpensive, works with all machines and removes unnecessary electronics.

Our second solution is to add a controller that takes your 12 volt signal, changes it to Bobcat CanBus language and then allows the controller in the attachment to convert it back to 12 volts.  I have had an Engineer working on this and he is years behind in providing a solution.  Because of this, I have nothing to offer at this time.  If this ever comes available, there will still be issues with some machine brands.

Cat/Terex/ASV 8 pin - They do not provide enough control pins to operate this controller.  We would have to make a special one that had limited functions.

Cat and John Deere 14 pin - They do not provide a keyed hot pin (Pin K).  Because of this, we would have to produce a special model with an external 12 volt supply to power the controller.

If and when a controller is available, it will cost a lot more money and it does open you up to having 2 pieces of electronics on the outside of your machine, just to actuate your attachments.  It is still best to use a harness and do away with the electronics altogether.

In the beginning, Bobcat created the loader and then added auxiliary hydraulics to the boom to be able to operate different attachments like a grapple and an auger.  This made the loader so much more useful than for just loading manure.  As time passed the need for extra controls was need to operate things like snow blowers, brooms and soil conditioners.  This led Bobcat to add a Deutsch 14 pin connector to the boom with button controls inside the cab on the sticks to handle these functions.  A whole new industry was born, however Bobcat saw all of these attachment manufacturers as enemies instead of partners that would help them to sell more machines.

Around 1998, Bobcat filed patents to use CAN technology on their machines and the 7 pin connector was born.  This allowed the attachment to have a corresponding computer which would only communicate with the Bobcat.  In their eyes they were locking out all of the competition from putting their attachments on Bobcat's and also locking in current customers from buying other brands of machines if they owned a lot of Bobcat attachments.  What this really did was piss off all of their customers including me.  As time went by, the Bobcat corporation made it harder and harder and more expensive to add 14 pin control to their machines so SKid Steer Genius was born.

The first thing we did was create controllers that would plug into the Bobcat 7 pin connector and turn the controls back into 12 volt controls so any attachment would work on Bobcat.  The next thing we did was to create bypass harnesses which would circumvent the Bobcat Attachment computers and put the attachment back to the way it should be.  This allowed customers to install their Bobcat attachments onto their new machines from Kubota, Case, new Holland, etc.

Compared to trying to operate and maintain the Bobcat Attachment Computers, these harnesses are a dream.  You simply unplug the Bobcat computer harness from the attachment solenoids and plug in each pair of wires into each stack of solenoids.  There are generally 1, 2,4,5 or six solenoids.  The most common way to install them is with the following color selections:

1 Solenoid - Use Green or Orange wire pair

2 Solenoids - Use the Green/Orange Pair

4 Solenoids - Use the Green/Orange pair on one stack and the White/Red pairs on the second stack

5 Solenoids - Use the Green/Orange pair on one stack and the White/Red pairs on the second stack and either the White/Black Stripe or Blue wire for the 5th solenoid.

6 Solenoids - Use the Green/Orange pair on one stack and the White/Red pairs on the second stack and either the White/Black Stripe and Blue wire for the 5th and 6th solenoids.

Bobcat 96" & 108" Laser Grader Controls FAQ

For years, I have been asked to create a harness to operate a Bobcat Grader on any machine with external laser receivers other than the Bobcat brand.  Well this is the harness that many people have been waiting for.  It allows you to operate your Futurra Laser Receivers with your Bobcat 96/108" Grader.  This harness completely bypasses the Bobcat computer and allows you to operate Futtura Receivers on your grader seamlessly.  This item only does the bypass on the Bobcat controller. 

Here are other items that you may or may not need for your application to make everything work on your specific machine.  We have broken everything out since everyone's applications are different.

Machine Controls:  Bobcat grader's require 8 momentary controls just to operate.  

Controls are as follows:

Left Blade - Up/Down

Right Blade - Up/Down

Angle - Left/Right

Side Shift - Left Right

These are the bare minimum control requirements which mean you need 8 controls.  Almost every modern machine only gives you 6 controls.  If you want to operate laser receivers, you need a keyed 12 volt supply just to power the receivers.  You also need an additional locking switch to turn the receivers on from manual to auto controls.  There are simply not enough controls on your machine to manage this.

We have a couple of solutions for this.  The first one is our Super Controller.  This is a control system that can be added to your machine in addition to your existing controls.  They are very intuitive when using a grader and work exceptionally well.

The Super Controllers give you all of the controls you will need to operate a Bobcat grader in manual and auto modes.  The down side for some is that they use external micro joysticks to manage this process.  Your stock handle controls will not work.

For some machines you may be able to use your existing sticks using the following product.  

We have recently created a new product that allows you to use 6 of your existing controls and then adds 4 more controls plus a keyed +12 volt K pin.  If you own a 14 pin equipped machine with 6 control switches installed, you can use this product.  Examples of machines that are ok to use are Case, Wacker Neuson, Kubota after 2018, Yanmar, OLD Bobcat, Gehl, Mustang, Hyundai, New Holland & Manitou.  Cat and John Deere will not work.  

The product is called the Injector because it injects 4 x 12 volt controls into your current control harness. This is the harness that many people have been waiting for.  It allows you to operate your Futurra Laser Receivers with your Bobcat 96/108" Grader.  This harness completely bypasses the Bobcat computer and allows you to operate Futtura Receivers on your grader seamlessly.  This item only does the bypass on the Bobcat controller. 

Here are other items that you may or may not need for your application to make everything work on your specific machine.  We have broken everything out since everyone's applications are different.

This harness provides the primary control to the grader solenoids as well as a 14 pin pigtail that allows you to plug your Future receivers directly into the the controls with no additional wiring.  If you plan on using another brand of receivers, you will need to make sure the receivers are pinned to a 14 pin female connector in the following manner.

My Caterpillar Skid Steer has an 8 pin electrical connector and 7 hydraulic lines.  How do I operate my attachments?

Response: For all A, B & C series machines this is true.  There are 4 button controls that electrically control attachments.  There are two hydraulic controls that operate two functions on some attachments.  For instance cold planers and stump grinders would have 5 hydraulic lines attached and the 8 pin electrical control.  Four of the functions will work electrically while two functions are run hydraulically from your loader in addition to the wheel being spun hydraulically. 

This is a problem for people upgrading to D-Series machines because the two extra hydraulic lines are missing.  This turns into an expensive upgrade to all of your 5 line attachments because you have to replace the hydraulic control block.  Average cost for this is $3500 so most people just sell their attachments.

Typical Caterpillar 8 Pin connectors are pinned out like this:

A - Ground

B - Left Switch Down - Aux 7

C - Left Hand Right Switch - Aux 6

D - Left Switch - Aux 5

E - Ground

My Caterpillar Skid Steer has an 14 pin electrical connector and I have my attachments from my older Caterpillar which were 8 pin.  How do I operate my attachments?

Response: Starting in 2014 when the D-Series were available, Cat did away with the 5 line hydraulic system and 8 pin electrical control.  This is a good thing in most cases except for those with cold planers, wheel saws and some stump grinders.  Those attachments required an extra set of hydraulic lines for the 5th and 6th function.  The D-Series does not have these lines so you have to upgrade those attachments.  The cost is about $3500 so it really is not worth it.  

For all other attachments you can either purchase a 14 pin to 8 pin electrical adapter, chop off the existing 8 pin and install a 14 pin connector or swap out the harness.  It all depends on what you find comfortable.  The 8 pin should be left in place if you have older machines that may need to run your attachments still.  

The 14 pin connectors are pinned with control 1, 2, 3, & 4 in line with the standard Bobcat controls.  For some reason Cat decided to pin two pins differently.  I recommend that you move the pins on the machine so that you will be compatible with 75% of all of the attachments out there.  If there is anything that I hate, it is when manufacturers purposely make things difficult when they don't need to be.  Simplify your life.  Move the pin.  If you don't want to then just remember that on some attachments the 6th function won't work.  For all other attachments that only require up to 5 controls, you will not notice anything.  It will just work.

For full operation of every function, you would need a 6014 for D series and a 4008 for A, B, C series. For the older machines, not all attachments will work such as cold planers because the older machines used two extra hoses to operate the 5 & 6 functions instead of electrical controls.  The attachments would have to be modified to work correctly.

These attachments can kind of be a pain sometimes if they are high flow.  Cat uses a sense wire in their attachments that are required to jump two pins over to tell the Cat machines that the attachment is high flow.  The pins are jumped from Ground to Pin K or J.  The problem occurs on Cat D Series attachments with 14 pins where the operator decides to plug into another brand of machine like a Kubota.  Kubota, Gehl, Old Bobcat, Mustang, Takeuchi all follow the old Bobcat style of pinning where there is a power pin located in pin K.  This means that if you try to plug a Cat D-series attachment into any of these machines, you will blow the attachment control fuse and nothing will work.  People have spent days trying to figure out why they cannot get their attachments to work and it is just this simple pin causing all of the trouble.  The best thing to do is to use a small jewelers screwdriver that will fit in the K socket of the connector and tap the socket back into the connector.  This will leave it in place so that you can always use the attachment on a Cat D-Series.

I have a Kubota, Takeuchi, New Holland, Gehl, Mustang or any other 14 Pin machine and I want to operate my Cat dozer blade on my machine.  Can you explain what I need to make this work?

Here is what you need for a Cat dozer to any 14 pin machine.

The end of the end tension uses the same sockets at the 14 pin female so this is really easy.  Just pop off the orange cap on one end of the extension.  Look inside and you will see the sockets locked in place.  Carefully slide a small slotted screw driver down inside and dislodge the sockets.  Slide them out and then slide the strain relief from the 14 pin connector over the wire and slide the black wire into the back of the 14 pin connector into socket position B.  Slide the white wire into socket position C.  You can now assemble the rest of the connector and plug it into your machine.  NOTE for John Deere Owners:  You will need to install the black wire in socket position A because they use a different ground position.  For Cat D Series missing the two buttons next to the right roller, insert the white wire into socket E.

For the Y-adaptor, look down on the blade and you will see two sets of wires going to two separate solenoids.  Unplug the existing wires and plug in the Y-adapter.  Plug the other end of the extension into the receptacle end of the Y-adaptor.  Use tie wraps to hold the extension wire against the hoses and route in such a way that they cannot be easily damaged.

The blade will now work like this.  Using your pump control, go forward and back and the blade will tilt from one side to the other.  Hold a button on your left stick and also use your pump control and the function will change from tilt to angle.  It’s that simple.

The problem with these older attachments is that Cat only set them up to run electronically on two of the functions.  The side shift was handled by a second set of hydraulics coming from the loader.  In 2014 when Cat came out with the D-series, they did away with these extra lines and installed a 14 pin connection.   This raised havoc with cold planer companies who upgraded machines because they now lost their side shift function just because they bought a new machine. 

Your machine would need to have a 4th and 5th line set up as control lines.  Not high flow.  Only old Cat, Terex and ASV's do this because of the Cat influence.  You have to convert that attachment by changing the hydraulic valve and that comes from Cat and it is expensive.  Cost from CAT is about $3500. 

Or, you just don't use the side shift. 

Or, you have two sets of couplers that you plug and unplug as you need to.  One set runs the attachment and the other set is for side shift.

I have a CAT D Series machine and I bought the SG-BPH-14-6-9DP harness.  How do I set it up to operate on my machine so that I can properly operate a Bobcat Soil Conditioner?

Nothing lines up like it would on a Bobcat so it is personal preference.  Here is how I figure out each attachment. I will speak about each pair by their color.  I will not reference black because every pair has a black ground wire for return.  For this attachment.  You have two stacks of solenoids.  One stack for left/right and one stack for up/down.  There is one solenoid one it's own for drum reversal.  

So here goes.

1:  Make sure that your hydraulics are connected properly.  Bobcat is backwards to everyone else.  The attachment hose with a female coupler needs to go down and be connected to the port that is stamped P while the hose with the male connector should connect to the T port.

2:  Take the orange and the green pair. Pick a solenoid stack.  Install green on top and orange on the bottom.  Do nothing else.  Start the machine and run the hydraulics.  Touch the buttons on your left handle tagged Aux 5 & 6.  Are you happy with the function that they operate?  If you want the other function to work, then move the wires over to the other solenoid stack.  If you want the buttons to function in different directions, all you do is put the top wire on the bottom and the bottom wire on the top solenoid.  If you are happy with this function then move to step 3.

3:  Using the pink and white wire set, plug them into the next stack of solenoids.  Start the machine and try the right handle Aux 3 & 4.  Are you happy with the direction?  If not, then swap the wires top to bottom.

4: The drum reversing is handled by the solenoid that sits by itself.  With a Cat you have a switch that is locking so you are lucky, however you need to re-pin the connector to make it work properly.

6: Once the pins are moved you can install the white/black stripe wire into the lone solenoid. Use the switch on the upper panel to operate it.  Aux 8.

6: Once the pins are moved you can install the white/black stripe wire into the third solenoid stack. Use the switch on the upper panel to operate it.  Aux 8.

This is not ideal but because of the way that Cat sets up their handles, it will not operate the same way as Bobcat.  

• Planer/Wheel Saw - The side shift one way will be Aux 7 and the other way Aux 8.
• Stump Grinder - The up down will be Aux 7 and the other way Aux 8.

Start the machine and everything should work.  It just will not be ideal.  Please understand this before you order.  It is not our fault that the manufacturers do this on purpose.

To begin with, these mulchers are made by Fecon.  If you would have bought a Fecon model instead of Bobcat, you would not be in this mess and would have probably paid less.  Here is what you are going to do to get this thing running.

Bobcat insists that Fecon install a fail safe brake.  This means that the brake has to be under power to operate.  If you do not have a hood option you only need one connection to operate.  Please use our BPG-14-9-6DP or DT depending on connections needed.

On our harness, you must move H to J.  This is Aux 8 and it is a locking switch located on the left side of the upper console.  Not on the sticks.  Make sure that the wire that is white with a black stripe is plugged into the single solenoid located next to where the main hoses come in.  Since Aux 8 is a locking switch you will turn the switch on to release the brake and turn it off to lock the brake.  If you have a hood, use the green wire for the bottom solenoid and the orange wire for the top solenoid.  No other connections are needed. 

If this is a high flow attachment, you will need to install the High Flow jumper which is already inside your connector.  Cat uses a ground sense to turn on the high flow in the machine.  The problem is that is is different for different models.

For example, CAT XHP uses Pin N, while XPS uses Pin K.  Simply remove the shrink tubing from the jumper inside our connector and push the socket into the correct location for your machine.  Using a little spry silicone or water soluble lube on the socket will allow it to slide in easily. 

Re-assemble the connector and plug it all back in.  Turn on your machine and make sure you are moving your roller forward and locking it in place.  If this is reverse and the mulcher does not run, you must swap the hydraulic couplers.  Male to female and female to male ends because Bobcat runs reverse to Cat.  YOU MUST DO THIS because if you roll the roller down and lock it on, it will say you are running high flow but you are not.  High flow only works in the forward direction.

I have a CAT D Series machine and I bought the SG-BPH-14-6-9DP harness.  How do I set it up to operate on my machine so that I can properly operate a Bobcat 84" Grader with no laser?

When you roll your hydraulics forward, you should not hear any noticeable noise.  If the lines are backwards, you will hear a noise and the blade will move a little.

2:  Take the orange and the green pair. Pick a solenoid stack.  Install green on top and orange on the bottom.  Do nothing else.  Start the machine and run the hydraulics.  Touch the buttons on your left handle tagged Aux 5 & 6.  Are you happy with the function that they operate?  If you want the other function to work, then move the wires over to the other solenoid stack.  If you want the buttons to function in different directions, all you do is put the top wire on the bottom and the bottom wire on the top solenoid.  If you are happy with this function then move to step 3.

3:  Using the pink and white wire set, plug them into the next stack of solenoids.  Start the machine and try the right handle Aux 3 & 4.  Are you happy with the direction?  If not, then swap the wires top to bottom.

4: Take the final set of wires (White/Black Stripe and Blue).  With a Cat you have two switches on the upper left console above your head labelled Aux 7 and 8. To use these with our harness you need to move two pins in the connector to make it work properly.

6: Once the pins are moved you can install the white/black stripe and blue wires into the last solenoids. Use the switches on the upper panel to operate it.  Aux 7 & 8

Aux 7 Operation - You will need to switch your two speed control which is the button with the rabbit symbol down.  This will allow you to use the left handle trigger to operate that function.

Aux 8 Operation - This toggle is right next to the rabbit symbol and acts as a stand alone switch which lock so you will need to reach up and toggle this on and off as needed.  This sucks because if you do not toddle it off when you are done, it will continue to drive the solenoid and mess things up for the other functions.

Once all of the connections are complete, start the machine and everything should work.

How to operate Cat D-Series machines with a Genius BHP Harness. 

Cat D-Series machines come with up to four control buttons on the joystick controls.  Two on the left and and optional two on the right.  Their locations are shown below for reference.  This is good for products like snow blowers, brooms and soil conditioners.  The problem arises when you want to operate a cold planer which requires 6 controls.  The additional controls are on the machine but are difficult to operate.  They are labelled on the upper side of the left cab as Aux 7 & Aux 8.  Aux 7 is a switch that you select and bypass the trigger switch two speed for one extra control.  Aux 8 is a locking toggle that you select but then need to remember to de-select or the function will stay operating. 

This operation can be extremely frustrating to operate because you have to remove your hand from the controls and most cold planers require that you select two buttons at once.  This can mean that you use your left hand to select Aux 8 and then take your right hand and move it to the left stick simultaneously.  Thanks for that CAT!

When installing a Genius BPH-14 harness you must pay attention to what buttons are installed in your machine.  If you have no button controls, there will be no voltage applied at the 14 pin so that circuit will not work.  If all of the switches are installed, then please follow these directions.  C & D pins are the primary controls and they correspond to the Green and Orange wire set in the Genius harness.  Install those wires first to control your primary functions.  The secondary functions are normally operated with the White and Red wire sets however you may not have the buttons installed so if you only need 4 functions you can switch to the Blue and White/Black Stripe wire set.  If you need more controls, please contact your dealer to have the additional buttons added. 

Once all of the wires are installed properly you need to look at the 14 pin end.  Since we sell the harnesses as a universal kit, you will need to move two of the sockets.  Move G to A and H to J.  While you have the connector apart, now is the time to install the high flow jumper if needed.  There is a small black wire installed with a piece of shrink tubing covering it.  Remove the shrink tubing and install it in the socket position for your machine.  K for XPS and N for XHP.  This is a sense wire that is connected to ground.  Your machine will not allow you to turn on high flow without this jumper is installed.  Care must be taken if you re-use the harness because you do not want to install the harness on a low flow attachment with the high flow jumper installed or you can damage the attachment.

Hydraulic Flow.

If you are converting a Bobcat Attachment, you must swap the couplers on the attachment hose ends to allow full flow in the forward direction.  You can check this by following the hydraulic lines to where they plug into the control block.  There will be a P or T stamped on the block.  For Cat, the P must have the Female connection and the T must have the Male connection.

Once the hydraulics are set, you can install everything and test.  Turn on your hydraulic flow and operate the electrical controls.  If everything is good, then you are set.  If you want to change directional controls, you can easily unplug the wires from the solenoids and move them to another location to which ever suits your needs.

This FAQ explains how to convert a Caterpillar cold planer to work on any other skid steer loader.  It is a pretty simple procedure if your current skid steer has 6 electrical controls and you understand how the planer works.  Please read this thoroughly as we spend a lot of time coaching people because they say our harnesses/adapters don't work when in fact they do but the user did not read their manual.

Caterpillar Cold Planer - Theory of Operation.

The design issue that Cat had with these planers is that they need 8 functions from 6 controls.  How they accomplished this was to use the side shift control as a bi-directional control as well when a secondary button is pushed.  To accomplish this, you must have your hydraulics running through the planer so the drum is spinning with your hands off of the controls.  Next, you can find and use the side shift buttons which in a Cat are switches 3 & 4 which translates to C & D pins in the 14 pin connector.  The location of these buttons are on the right stick which is almost always the opposite of every other machine.

Once you establish the side shift buttons for your machine, remember them as you will need them to control the direction of every single other function.  With this knowledge, you can easily push other buttons on your sticks and figure out which button does what.  We are including a map below to help you figure this out.

High Flow jumpers.  Cat uses a jumper in pin K which goes to ground to tell the machine that you are using a high flow attachment and to allow the machine to switch on high flow.  This is a problem in almost every other machine on the market because they use pin k as a keyed 12 volts.  Our adapters leave out pin K for this reason so if you use our adapters, you can just plug in the planer and go.  If you are just moving pins, you need to make sure that pin K is pushed back into the connector or your will blow your fuse as soon as you switch the key on.  Please have a look at how the Cat controls below are configured.  You can match these controls to our table below this image to figure out how your machine controls will work.

For newer Bobcat 7 pin, you need a 6014 controller and you will need to modify the sockets in the attachment connector.  Remove pin K, Move A to G and J to H and you will be good to go.

Currently CAT is changing over some of their attachments to SMART technology.  This is a similar tactic to what Bobcat did in 2020.  The grader and cold planer are what we know of so far.  It is easy to tell by looking at the 14 pin and looking for sockets in the following locations. L,M,N & P are the CAN control lines.  If you see these it is a SMART attachment and at this time we cannot help you.  Our advice is to not buy these attachments from CAT.  There are many other awesome brands out there that cost a lot less and do more.  These attachments have computers on board so that's another thing to go wrong.  They will only work with CAT D series so your resale market will be limited.  Just avoid them and save yourself a lot of grief.  It's time that customers stood up and said enough!!!

I have been told that the Bobcat 7 pin connectors contain a different voltage that will not allow me to operate my 8 pin or 14 pin attachments. Is this true?

Response:

Kind of.  Pins 1, 2 and 3 are ground and key operated 12volts.  This is to power the controller contained in each Bobcat attachment.  The small pins are CAN High and CAN Low.  Only two of them are actually used.  This sends a digital signal to the attachment controller and allows it to operate when you push a button on your stick.  There are other things that happen as well, but that is too deep for this conversation.

You cannot just cut of the 7 pin connector and expect it to work.  You will smoke the controller and you can possibly damage your machine.  You have to remove the Bobcat controller out of the attachment and use one of our bypass harnesses to plug directly into the attachment control solenoids.  Our 14 pin harnesses will work on almost any machine available including Cat D-series while our 8 pin harnesses work with Cat A,B,C-Series, ASV and Terex. 

Once you replace the harness, you will have a direct to attachment control the way it used to be.  This will cost a lot less in the long run and make it so much easier to troubleshoot if you damage something along the way.  I have said for over a decade that the Bobcat 7 pin system was nothing but a marketing ploy. (My opinion) I believe that this was sold to unsuspecting buyers as a great new innovation but 5 years later after you accumulated attachments, you were stuck always having to buy Bobcat's because the cost to change out your attachments was so great.  If the attachments would have remained 14 pin, you could have easily gone back and forth between many manufacturers.  Caterpillar did a similar thing with their 8 pin, 5 line system.  Now old time Cat people are learning an expensive lesson when they try to change machines or upgrade to a new D-series.  Some of their attachments are useless because the cost of conversion is so high.

Bobcat 7 Pin Attachments

Many people buy Bobcat branded attachments and think they can just plug them in to their non-Bobcat loaders.  Unless the attachment is an older unit using the old style 14 pin connector or it has been updated with either a dual harness or replacement harness using a 14 pin, you will not be able to just plug it in.

Why can’t I just chop off the 7-Pin connector and change it to a 14 or 8 pin connector? 

The attachment has a computer controller that uses CAN technology to be able to communicate with a Bobcat machine only.  No other brand of machine operates like this.  It is an intentional play by Bobcat so that once you buy their machines, you are locked into their attachments.  If you have a fleet of machines and attachments and decide to one day change to another brand, you are less likely to change as the costs to change the attachments over can be staggering.

Skid Steer Genius has taken this on as a major project to overcome the inability of these attachments to be universal.   We have also taken on the Bobcat machines in an attempt to make them easily adapt to any attachment.

What have we done?

For Bobcat Machines?

We created a series of CAN adapters that take the CAN signals from the machine and translate the codes into a switched 12 volt power on/off to drive the attachment solenoids directly.  We currently have 1, 2, 4 and 6 channel adapters available.  They all have limited latching features enabled, that allows the operator to turn on 1 or more channels and remove their thumb while the channel stays on.  This can be a real bonus on some attachments that require continued power to keep a function active.  It really saves the fatigue on your thumbs.

For Bobcat Attachments?

We have developed a line of bypass harnesses and are currently working on an electric bypass solution.  The harnesses are inexpensive and simple.  You merely choose the connector style that you need which is either 8 pin Cat/ASV/Terex or 14 pin which is all others.  From there you will get a harness that replaces the entire Bobcat CAN computer located in the attachment.  This turns the attachment back into a controllable attachment like every other manufacturer makes today.  You will be replacing the main 7-pin harness, the CAN computer box and the output harness in the attachment with a simple single harness.  Instructions are included to make it as simple as possible.  It should only take you 5 minutes to make the switch.

Warning: 

There are still people out there that want to just buy a connector and chop off the 7 pin connector and add their own.  DON’T DO IT!  It won’t work and you are wasting so much money.  Here is what happens.  You ruin a $350 harness by chopping into it.  They are really hard to rebuild because they use a 2-step crimp.  I waste more pins trying to repair these things for people who won’t listen.  If you connect a powered connection and turn it on you will smoke the controller.  A $950 mistake that makes it so the attachment will never work on a 7 pin Bobcat again.  Instead, just spend a few dollars with Skid Steer Genius and buy a bypass harness.  Save yourself a lot of grief and get the attachment going as soon as possible. 

The Future:

We have been working on an electric CAN adaptor that will fool the Bobcat attachments into thinking they are connected to a Bobcat machine when in fact they are connected to anything but a Bobcat.  This has been a long uphill battle and when it is ready, it still won’t work with every attachment.  Here are the ones we know will work.  Dozer, Brooms, Soil Conditioner, Grader w/o Laser, Cement Mixer w/o RACS, V-Plow, Snow Blower.

Here are the attachments that it will not work with.  Grader with Laser, Concrete pump, Chipper.  Anything with RACS.

We are constantly working on new solutions to manufacturer created problems.  We rely on your feedback to come up with new solutions so if you are unhappy with something, let us know and we will try to formulate a solution.

Erskine/ Quick Attach are the same company so the attachment wiring is the same.  Quick attach is the online sales channel that Erskine uses so they can undercut their dealers and sell direct.  Very crafty way to treat their dealers.  I hope they don't treat their customers the same way.  They did buy our controllers back in the day and low and behold they now have their own version of our original controller.  I am told it is expensive and has a high failure rate.  

To get your attachment to work, you will need to upgrade the connection to a 14 pin standard industry Deutsch connector as they usually ship their attachments with a cheap trailer connector just to save a coupe of dollars.  You can purchase a 14 pin Female connector from us and install it using B for ground and then E,F,G & H from standard controls or C,D,E,F,G,&H for enhanced controls like a cold planer or stump grinder.  

Once you have a 14 pin installed or it is connected, you can use either our 4014, 6000 or 6014 controller to operate your attachment.  We offer a few options just so customer can buy what they need and not what we want them to buy.

ASV MACHINES EXPLAINED

Founded in 1983, ASV started producing Compact Track Loaders in 1990 for the heavy commercial industry.  The original machines were known as Posi-Track driven machines were a unique drive system for the day.

In 1998, ASV entered into an agreement with Caterpillar to produce their rubber track under carriage system. In 2011 Terex purchased ASV so ASV loaders were then offered under the Terex Brand name.  ASV Holdings was later formed in 2019 and then merged with Yanmar in September of 2019.

ASV Skid Steer/Compact Track Loaders use a 5 line hydraulic system for high flow whereby the smaller ½” couplers are used for low flow pressure and return and the larger ¾” couplers are used for the high flow pressure and return with a 3/8” female connection being used as the case drain.  ASV machines have an 8 pin electrical connection.

There are 4 button controls on the left stick that electrically control attachments.  If optioned properly, the two hydraulic low flow lines can be used for additional control while operating the high flow circuit.  For instance, cold planers and stump grinders would have 5 hydraulic lines attached and the 8 pin electrical control.  Four of the functions will work electrically while two functions are run hydraulically from your loader in addition to the wheel being spun hydraulically. 

This is a problem for people trying to adapt these attachments to other brands of machines because the two extra hydraulic lines are missing.  This turns into an expensive upgrade to all of your 5 line attachments, because you have to replace the hydraulic control block.  Average cost for this is $3500 so most people just sell their attachments.

Typical ASV 8 Pin connectors are pinned out like this:

A - Ground

B – Left Stick - Bottom Switch

C - Left Stick - Right Switch

D - Left Stick - Left Switch

E - Ground

G - Left Stick – Top Switch

F & H – Jumper for seat switch

On newer years, ASV added a 14 pin option, however we found this to be useless because it only adapts the 8 pin output without adding additional controls which are found in normal 14 pin machines.

Complaint New Case loader with High Flow and Enhanced High Flow - Bi-directional High Flow provides very little flow while Enhanced High Flow will not switch on.  What do I do?

Case requires a jumper plug to be installed which jumps Pin K to Pin L in the connector.  This is easy on a mower but more difficult on purchased attachments because the jumper will not be in the connector.  K pin is a 12 volt pin in Case so you must be careful to not try and use the plug from a Cat since they short K to B which is a ground.  Just another thing the manufacturers do to mess with their customers.

At the time of writing, we only have the standard plugs available for customers to make up their own jumper plugs.  You can find them by clicking on this link.  It is best to just solder a three inch wire from one socket to the next and then push one into K and one into L.

Warning:  On most machines High Flow only works in the forward direction so make sure your attachment is plumbed properly so the flow from the male coupler on the machine is going into the hose that connects to the attachment with a P stamped on the hydraulic block.  Failure to do this will cause you to operate your attachment not at it's capacity.

John Deere machines offer up to 6 controls in their modern cabs.  Older machines came with almost nothing, but the sticks were upgradable thus there is a real collection of controls out there, so sometimes it takes us some real trouble shooting to figure out how the machine is set up.

I am only going to cover the modern machine here since there were no rules on the older machines.

Buttons are laid out with 4 controls on the left stick and a toggle on the upper right side of the cab.  This is shown below.

The pin out goes like this.

Pin A - Ground, Pin B - Open, Pin C - Right Down, Pin D - Left Down, Pin E - Left Up, Pin F - Dash Down, Pin G - Right Up, Pin H - Dash Up - Three pin connector fires on Pin D & E.

These are the common outputs per the Bobcat original specification except for one thing.  The ground pin is in the A position so nothing will work.  Our advice it to move that pin from A to B so it becomes universal.  You will save yourselves a lot of head scratching in the future and even save some money.  Most of the JD attachments are made by Paladin.  You can buy the exact attachments online for less money but they will come pre-wired for the universal specification with the ground pin in B.  It will be no issue for you this way.  Otherwise, yo will always be moving the socket in the attachments to get them to work.

What's missing?  Pin K - This pins is on almost all machinery except John Deere until 2020.  This is a 12 volt pin that operates when you switch your key on.  It does not exist on machines built prior to 2020.  This can be a real problem for some attachments. You can run a spare fused wire out the boom and connect into the main 14 pin connector since nothing is installed in that position.

John Deere also furnishes a 3 pin connector on their booms and then there is a mating connection on their attachments.  I think they did this because most attachments only use 2 connections so the connections are a lot cheaper to furnish than a 14 pin connector.  These two pins are fired off using two of the buttons on the left control handle.  They work in parallel to two of the pins installed in the 14 pin connector so you are not gaining anything by having it on your machine. Pin A is ground while Pin B is Control 1 and Pin C is control 2.

I bought a Kubota SVL75 and want to run a snowblower on it.  What do I do? 

Response:  A good question that I have worked on for years.  These machines only have two possible controls on the sticks.  This included the SVL75/90 and 95.  If you order a 14 pin kit from Kubota, you will receive a 14 pin kit that only has 4 pins installed.  You will receive a ground (Pin B), 12V (Pin K) and two switchable circuits (Pin C & D).  This is enough to run a broom or a Harley Rake.  It will not work for a snow blower or Bobcat Dozer because there are 2 stacks of 2 solenoids required to operate all of the functions.  Left/Right and Up/Down controls are usually required on most modern snow blowers.  All tilting and angling functions are controlled via a solenoid on the Bobcat Dozer. You need something else other than the Kubota buttons.  Kubota released an enhanced controller which tie wraps onto the left stick in 2016.  The cost was originally $1500 so we developed the Super Controller with a permanent install kit for Kubota's.  It consists of 2 micro joysticks that mount into your control handles and provides up to 8 momentary controls and 2 latching controls.

With our controller, you will be able to operate any modern attachment and future products as they come available.

In 2017 the SVL95 was supposed to come with the SSV handles which provided 6 controls.  We ordered a new machine only to find out that since they had not run out of previous year machines, they serialized our machine as a new machine but gave us the old handles.  We have found that this happened to other customer all the way into 2018.  Some customers managed to return their machines and get ones equipped with the new handles.  We should have done the same thing because the standard handles are a big disappointment.

The new SSV handle equipped SVL75/95 machines are really nice and finally solves the control issues that Kubota has kept secret until we came on the scene with our controllers.  For those of you just realizing that you do not have enough controls, please click on the above links and learn about our solutions.  Please support our products and buy them instaed of their box of plastic buttons.  Our system works a lot better and is less expensive. 

I have an SVL 90/95 and I want to be able to run both of these attachments - Cat PC306B and Bobcat 18 PLA.  My machine only has 3 buttons on the left stick.

You have three problems:  

1:  You need to upgrade the machine.  This is what we came up with 5 years ago because we own one of these machines.  SUPER CONTROLLER - PERMANENT INSTALL

2:  You need to adapt the Cat Harness - You can move the pins A to G and J to H.  Remove pin K if it is installed.  Or buy this adapter. CAT ADAPTER

3:  You need to bypass the Bobcat controller on the BC planer  with this harness.  BOBCAT ATTACHMENT BYPASS HARNESS

Unfortunately these companies do not play well together.  The best way to combat this is to just keep on providing feedback to the dealers letting them know that this is BS.  All attachments should work on all machines.  For now this is the best we can do to make these products work together.

I have a Kubota SVL 75/90/95 with three buttons on the top of the left stick so I am only capable of 2 switched controls.  How can I operate a Bobcat dozer blade?

That project will present you with two issues.  

1:  We need to convert the blade from Bobcat CAN control to standard 12 volt controls wired directly to the solenoids.

2: We need to supply your machine with enough controls to operate the dozer.

Let's start with #1.  If we use this bypass harness, we will be able to connect directly to the solenoids and have a 14 pin harness connected so it will plug directly into our machine controls.

"We" are basically just me (Rob). I set up Skid Steer Genius as a self service web site so I could focus on my other attachment companies because people were contacting me through them and I could never get any work done. 

On a typical day, I wake up at 6am and start answering questions received through the forms process.  I sometimes finish answering these around midnight. I answer 40+ requests and many of them are very similar so I end up getting really confused.  By documenting your questions and putting a name, phone number and email address to it, I can easily look back and see the responses and help you much faster than if you called me several times and we tried to remember what was said.

Many people come to Skid Steer Genius looking for help to unravel the mess that their machines are in when trying to change their attachments from one manufacturer to another.  They have an expectation or why haven't we fixed every little issue with their particular issue and even insult me for being too slow to respond to their problem.  

What everyone needs to understand is that there would be no Skid Steer Genius had not all of these companies conspired to screw their own customers just for the sake of greed.  They want you to think that the most basic attachment will not work on your particular brand of machine and vise versa.  This is simply no true.  

In the early days they mostly all used the same connections except for Cat/Terex/ASV.  Bobcat, Case, John Deere, Kubota, Takeuchi, New Holland and Yanmar all used a 14 pin Deutsch connection while Cat/Terex/ASV used a Deutsch 8 pin.  Most of them used the same pin-out so it was easy to move the attachment from brand to brand.  John Deere got sneaky and moved the ground from B to A so nothing would work.  I always try to get people to just move the ground back so they can run universal attachments.  

Cat came along with their D-Series and changed from an 8 pin to 14 pin connection.  This was their chance to enter the main stream, but that would be much too easy for their customers now wouldn't it.  They really threw a wrench in the system because they made 4 of them common but messed with the power and two of the last pins.  If you take a Cat attachment that is configured for High Flow and try to plug it into another brand of machine, the sense lines are connected to ground and back to the K pin which in the machine is hot so guess what happens?  The fuse blows in the machine so you literally chase your tail for hours trying to figure out why.  Do you think this is an accident?  Hell no.  Cat had the opportunity to fall in line with everyone else and they purposely chose not to.

Bobcat is a whole other story.  They could have easily expanded the 14 pin but nope.  They created a CAN control system that would not work with anyone else.  Each attachment contains a controller that is computer based using CAN technology.  They could have used this on only the advanced attachments (4 of them) and left the rest of them alone.  But noooooo.  That was too easy.  So as a customer, you get to buy a $1200 controller installed in each attachment and in the future, when the attachment dies from heat, you get to buy it again.  Such a pleasure these people are to deal with.  What a great way to treat your customers.

Skid Steer Genius was created to defeat whatever blockage these companies try to create.  The attachments are so simple so why shouldn't the controls be easy to operate as well?  We will continue to fight for your rights through the future and knock down any rod block that these guys try to put in our way.

I want to be able to operate a snow blower, but my machine is not equipped with either a 7, 8 or 14 pin connector.  What do I do?

First of all, Skid Steer Genius is not affiliated with any manufacturer, thus we do not have access to any of their parts or databases.  We are not able to source any factory items for you.  If you want the buttons on your joystick to work, you will need to contact the dealer for your machine and give them the model, year and serial number so they can tell you what is available.

We manufacture wired and wireless options to add to your machine. Each has different functions and different price points.  Here is what we offer.

1:  Cheapest - 4 output joystick control box.  The SB-JCB-100 control box features a plug and play input and output.  On the input there is a cigarette lighter and on the output there is a 14 pin Deutsch plug.  Since there are generally 6 possible machine pin combinations and this box has 4 outputs, not all attachments will work without moving a couple of pins in either the box harness or the attachment harness. 2: Wireless Controllers - We make a 1, 2 and 6 output Bluetooth controller that uses a phone app for controls with a separate FOB on the 6 channel.  These are really easy to install and simple to use.  The 1 & 2 channel are simple add on Bluetooth relays that use the phone app only.  The 6 channel also uses the App as well as a supplied FOB that magnet mounts in the machine to give you internal and external controls for any attachment requiring up to 6 controls.

MACHINE AND ATTACHMENT CONNECTORS EXPLAINED

The most common connectors in the skid steer industry are made by Deutsch.  These originated in Germany but are often sourced from China, Mexico and the USA.  This page is devoted to the 8 pin and 14 pin round aluminum connectors that you will commonly find if your machine or attachments are professionally made.  You will find other kinds of connectors, especially trailer style connectors.  These should be avoided at all costs because there is no standard.  Using poor quality trailer style connections should tell you a little about the company making the attachments.

When people describe these connections, the proper way is to call them out by their total pin designations.  Either 8 pin or 14 pin are the standards even though every position may not be used in your instance.  A typical 8 pin uses only 6 pins.  Four control pins and two grounds. 

14 PIN CONNECTORS & CONTROLS:

Bobcat established the original pin-out sequence and later when the competition started making attachments, the Bobcat corporation changed the controls from 14 pin 12 volt, to 7 pin CAN digital control which was designed to knock out the competition.  All it really did was infuriate customers.  We were one of those customers so Skid Steer Genius was born.  Only 14 pin configurations are covered here. For 7 pin controls, CLICK HERE.

Bobcat 14 pin connections are configured with a Ground and 6 controls and one keyed power pin.  Kubota, New Holland, Gehl, Mustang, Takeuchi, JCB, Volvo, Case, Wacker Neuson all follow this original configuration.  Caterpillar used the ground and 4 of the controls but used the power pin as a ground sense line so any Cat attachments plugged into these machines will immediately blow your fuse.  John Deere uses all of the same control pins but they move the ground pin so nothing will appear to work.  Our advice is to move the ground pin in your machine so that you will become universally compliant.

Primary connections are B – Ground, and C – Control 1 and D – Control 2.  This configuration covers 75 of all attachments.  These controls are generally on the left stick because the hydraulic controls are on the right.  Of course, Cat D-Series is the opposite just to make things difficult.  This enables you to control the hydraulic direction with your right hand while you simultaneously select the function with the left hand.  As more functions are needed, more buttons are added on the left stick and then the right stick or the dash.

Exceptions:  Some manufacturers have been adding a 7th locking function.  Kubota expanded controls operate a switched J pin that allows you to turn on and leave functions operating like laser controls.

One of the most important things that you can do as an operator is to validate your controls before you shop for attachments.  Many controls are offered as options so if you bought your machine used, you may not have any controls or may have only a few controls.  It was all up to the original owners and how they ordered them.  Problems always arise when customers buy attachments and try to operate them only to find out that they are missing vital controls to be able to make the attachments function properly.

It is a separate 4 position switch system that adds 2 momentary and 2 locking controls to your machine?

Why would I need this?  Some machine like the pre 2018 Kubota SVL's had only 2 controls.  Attachments like Cold Planers need at least 6 controls to function properly so this will add the additional controls as needed.  Other machines where you would like to operate a grader need up to 10 controls so if your machine is fully equipped with 6 controls, this will add the additional 4 controls.

How does it work?

It adds 4 switch positions to your existing controls by connecting to your 12 volt supply via a cigarette lighter plug.  That power is then fed down four control wires so that when you push one of the toggles, one of the wires will be powered with 12 volts.

How do I connect it?

You can use it as is by merely attaching the switch pack to a steel surface using the magnets or you can drill a location inside your cab and attach the mount permanently.  From there you will route the wire through the cab, down the boom and out to your hydraulic connectors.  You should try to follow the hydraulic lines and zip tie to then to protect the wire and to provide a solid surface to zip tie to.

Now for the interesting part.  You can buy the additional adaptor so it just plugs in to your main line.  If you buy the 14-14 pin adapter, the connections remain the same but you will 4 four additional outputs on the attachment connector 14 pin.  If you buy the 8-14 adaptor, your output will change from an 8 pin connection with 4 outputs to a 14 pin connection with 8 outputs.

How to wire directly into the 14 pin connector:  Use a small flat bladed screw driver and pop off the locking cap.  It comes off very easily.  Slide the same screwdriver into the connector and release the 4 pins and pull them out of the back of the connector.  You will now have 4 wires in your hand.  Open up the machine 14 pin connector and slide these wires into the connector in the following manner.  You may see white seals inside the connector that you need to remove with a small needle nose plier before you go any further.  Insert the wires in the following manner.  You can see the letters from the back and from the front of the connector.

1 - Red - M Pin - Momentary Toggle Up - Primarily used to side shift grader blade left.

2 - White - P Pin - Momentary Toggle Down - Primarily used to side shift grader blade right.

3 - Green - N Pin - Locking Toggle Up - Primarily used to switch GPS control on.

4 - Black - A Pin - Locking Toggle Down - Primarily used to switch laser receivers on

These are suggestions that follow the old Bobcat standard for operating their graders.  If you require anything else, you can pin it out any way you like.

14 pin connections only:  You do not need the additional adaptor.  You can dis-assemble the 4 pin connection and because it uses the exact pins as your 14 pin, you can open up your machine connector and slide the pins into place.  This will give you up to 10 connections that are as close to factory OEM specs as possible for a low price and minimal labor to install.

WARNING: CAT D SERIES - These controls are all messed up.  For the time being contact us with your specific requirements and we will see if the harness can be modified.  If we see that the majority of harness request are viable, we will create a new adapter.  You cannot just insert the wires for Cat since they mess with the grounds.

WARNING: JOHN DEERE - These machines are a mess because they move the ground to a driver pin.  Contact us with your specific requirement and we will see if it can be modified for your specific requirement.

This is a simple 4 solenoid control system that requires 4 x 12 volt signals to provide current to trigger each function.  If you have no controls in your machine, CID will furnish you with a joystick to hold between your knees while you run the attachment. 

If your machine has any kind of electrical controls installed with either a 14 pin or 8 pin installed on the boom, we can make it work.  It is up to you to contact CID and make sure you have their correct harness installed or you can remove it and buy one of ours.

The Halverson Splitter or Wood Processor is an ingenious device that allows you to use a skid steer loader to collect whole logs, saw and split them from the comfort of your cab. 

Our goal is to make this product universal with all skid steer loaders.  The current approach with Halverson is to provide some cable and a raw connector and have the customer figure it themselves. 

Our goal as always is to teach you how to effectively make the attachment work on any machine you desire with the least amount of trouble. 

So, let's begin.Here is what we know currently about these wood processors:

• Customers are given a pigtail, instructions and a raw connector and sent on their way. When questions arise, they are somehow given our number and we deal with something we never sold.
• The wrong instructions are sent so customers go in circles trying to get them to work.
• There is no CAN signal controller available for Bobcat except from us so customers are sent to us with the wrong instructions and we have to get them up and going.

Our goal with this FAQ is to make this a self service issue so we are not continually bombarded with Halverson customers and hopefully we can make a dollar or two for our efforts.

The Connector.

If you received a 14 pin Deutsch connector from Halverson, please throw it away and buy the whole connector from us.  This is inadequate to use in a commercial application because you are missing 2/3 of the connector.  I am told they did this to save money but it is crazy to ship them this way because you are missing the rear body, strain relief and seal.  You are cutting up logs and thus logs will fall on your hoses and electrical connections causing stress as well as water has full access to the back of the connections.

Before we even get started, buy the proper connector from us.  A few dollars spent now, will save you a lot in lost productivity later.  Click here to view the correct connector and hopefully buy one from us.

Next throw away their instructions because they are wrong.  Of course they may read this and finally change them so when you read this our instructions may match theirs.  Here is the correct pin-out for their attachment.Once you have the 14 pin connector installed, you can plug it into your machine and get to work.  Check your Halverson manual for the colors of what does what and cross reference to the guide below.

These instructions rely on you ordering your machine equipped with all of the buttons and controls necessary which mean all machines need the 6 control functions installed.

Here are some caveats.

John Deere.  Follow the guide above.  The external connections needed are for constant power.  For all John Deere machines prior to the model year 2020, there was no constant power pin provided so power needed to be brought in externally and pinned to Pin K.

Cat A/B/C, Terex/ASV - 8 Pin.  These machines only have a maximum of 4 control buttons while your processor requires 5 controls plus a 12V always on connection.  If you really want to operate this attachment from your hand controls, you should purchase and install our Super Controller.  CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS.

Cat D Series 14 Pin.  Cat furnishes up to 6 controls but not a hot.  Instead you give up your 12V hot for a control.  You can however make this work since the Halverson only uses 5 controls. 

Here is what you do. 

1. B will be ground, C & D will be your deck controls,
2. E & F will be your Grab up and down. 
3. Now the tricky part.  Use A as your Saw control.  You will need to switch the Rabbit button to trigger control on the left console of your machine for this to work.  Make sure it is switch on and then use your trigger to control the saw cut. 
4. Use pin J as your power lead.  Make sure it is switched on or no functions will work. 
5. With this complete, plug in your connector and test prior to screwing the strain relief on.

Shame on CAT for making this so difficult, but after a lot of trial and error, we usually get these to work.

Bobcat 7 Pin CAN Signal Connections:

This was Bobcat's way of making no aftermarket attachments work on their machines.  We have a way around it though so here is what you do.

1. Install the pins in the 14pin connector as shown above.
2. Check your left A1/A2 toggle with hydraulics on and make sure that the pump does not forward and reverse.  If it does, you can use the opposite pin to operate that function because the pump operates in the forward direction.  This may mean that you have to swap pins C & D on our harness and that is on you because your machine has a programming anamoly. Here is the pin out's needed to connect to our controller.
3. B - Ground(Black Wire), C - Actuate Saw(Yellow Wire), D - Grab/Split (Gray Wire), E - Grab/Split Down (Green), F - Grab/Split Up (Orange), G - Splitter Return (Blue), H - Splitter Out (Purple)
4. If A1/A2 toggle does not cause the pump control to forward and reverse, please buy this CAN controller.  It will plug directly into your Bobcat 7 pin, convert the signals to 12 volt controls and plug directly into your 14 pin connection.  CLICK HERE TO SEE AND PURCHASE THIS CONTROLLER.  

Yes, it is expensive.  Only because it cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars to develop it without any help from Bobcat.  Yes, there are companies like Quick Attach that are copying them but they cost more and don't work like ours do.  Plus they give you no support because they only copied my work and have nothing to add.  I have spent my life developing and supporting these solutions so please support my efforts and stay away from the thieves that pilfer my work.

The Buffalo Turbine blower features a hydraulically controlled fan with a bi-directional 12 volt electric motor to enable the chute to turn either left or right.  This makes wiring to a control box easy but adds challenges when operating it on a skid steer loader.  Most skid steer loaders output 12 volts on each control pin to switch a hydraulic solenoid on or off.  The Buffalo Blower requires one pair of wires with the polarity changing from one side to the other to either make the motor go forward or to switch to reverse. 

A cross over circuit is required to do this and an interface is required to make this happen.  Genius has come up with a series of products to enable this to work.

14 Pin Control:  Your machine must have a least 4 control buttons installed for this to work.  You will need to purchase two items:

1. A BPH-14 Bypass Harness - This harness will allow the controls of your machine to be extended down the hydraulic lines to your blower.  You will need to move the H socket to K to power the controller.  You will then plug in two of the control wire sets.  This is usually the green and orange set as they are the primary controls.  When you push one button, the controller will allow +12 volts to pass through the the blower control motor.  When you push the second button, the controller will swap the voltage to -12 volts which will reverse the motor and cause the blower housing to rotate in the opposite direction.

2. An electrical motor controller - EMC-10.  This controller requires a keyed 12 volt power source as well as two 12 volts switched inputs.  It will take care of the rest to swap the voltage at the electric motor.

8 Pin Control:  Your machine must have a least 4 control buttons installed for this to work.  You will need to purchase two items:

1. A BPH-8 Bypass Harness - This harness will allow the controls of your machine to be extended down the hydraulic lines to your blower.  You will need to plug the white wire into the power connector of the controller and have it switched on during use. You will then plug in two of the control wire sets.  This is usually the green and orange set as they are the primary controls.  When you push one button, the controller will allow +12 volts to pass through the the blower control motor.  When you push the second button, the controller will swap the voltage to -12 volts which will reverse the motor and cause the blower housing to rotate in the opposite direction.CLICK HERE to order this product. Bobcat 7 Pin CAN Control:  Our CAN control 4 channel box has special drivers and software that enables the user to change the box from 4 x 12 volt outputs to 2 x +12 volt - -12 volt operation with a simple program change. This enables the operator to use their Bobcat joysticks to run the chute directly.  CLICK HERE to order this product.

Wireless Control:  You will need our two channel Bluetooth controller and our EMC-10 Controller.

1. The 2 channel Bluetooth controller will operate from your phone and allow you to control the two functions of the blower. CLICK HERE to order this product.
   
2. An electrical motor controller - EMC-10.  This controller requires a keyed 12 volt power source as well as two 12 volts switched inputs.  It will take care of the rest to swap the voltage at the electric motor.
   

We are finding that there are still a lot of people trying to convert old snow blowers to operate on skid steer loaders.  In response to the huge amount of requests we have been receiving, we have come up with a solution.

Modern Snow Blowers use 1 hydraulic motor that turns the auger, another motor to turn the chute and then a hydraulic cylinder to change the chute angle.  The auger turns as soon as you switch your hydraulics on and then a hydraulic control block operates the two functions.  When you push a button on your controls in your cab, you will send 12 volts down a wire to one of four solenoids that will cause a cartridge valve to move and direct oil to the function you are trying to operate.

Older snow blowers have a direct connection from your loader to the auger motor with no extra controls for the functions.  When you switch on the hydraulics, the motor starts up immediately and there are no hydraulic controls for the functions.  To operate the functions, there will be an electric motor to turn the chute and a linear actuator to open and close the chute.  These require a 12 volt output that can switch polarity for the motor function can go forward or reverse.  There is no loader in existence that offers this function.  Because of this, Genius has designed a control box that will take your 4 x +12volt controls and change them into 2 x +-12 volt controls.  Don't worry about how we do it, but instead enjoy the magic.

For this to work, you must have proper wiring installed with dedicated power and ground from the machine so you may need to update your wiring a bit.  You are best to fill out the contact form on our web site and we will get back to you with what you will require.  We have found our control boxes to be the least expensive option when it comes to updated these old snow blowers.  We are experts in the field and always strive to innovate our industry.

Machine Controls:

Our control box needs 4 controls plus power to operate.  This can be accomplished with our BHP-14-6-9 harness which will provide you with 4 control wires and 2 spares so one can be configured for power.  Here are some typical examples.

Old Bobcat 14 pin including Case, Gehl, Mustang, Newer Kubota, New Holland, 2020 John Deere, Takeuchi & Wacker:  If ordered with at least 4 controls, you will have a Pin K installed which operates with your key.  You will need to move the blue wire from the H position and move it to Pin K.  Video #100, 134 and 135 will give you examples of how to do this.  For general controls, you will use the Orange/Green pair of wires for one set of controls and the White/Red wire for the second set.  Once installed you will use two buttons for forward/reverse of the chute control and two more buttons for the chute angle control.

John Deere prior to 2020: If ordered with at least 4 controls, you will have not a Pin K installed which leaves you without power for the control box.  For that reason we have designed a special harness that will draw power from the main harness when a button is pressed.  You will need to order our BPH-14-7-9 harness which will have 6 main connections plus a 7th connection that will provide the power that you need.  For general controls, you will use the Orange/Green pair of wires for one set of controls and the White/Red wire for the second set.  The green wire will be used for power. Once installed you will use two buttons for forward/reverse of the chute control and two more buttons for the chute angle control.

CAT D-Series: If ordered with at least 4 controls, you will have not have a Pin K installed which operates with your key.  There is another way to draw power but you will need to move the blue wire from H to J which will enable you to use the Aux 8 switch to turn power on and off to the control box. Video #100, 134 and 135 will give you examples of how to do this.  For general controls, you will use the Orange/Green pair of wires for one set of controls and the White/Red wire for the second set.  Once installed you will use two buttons for forward/reverse of the chute control and two more buttons for the chute angle control.  This will not work if you do not switch on Aux 8.

ASV, Terex and Cat A,B,C Series: - Currently nothing available.

SINGLE SOLENOID CONTROLS:

This style of control relies on the machine to provide the primary function and the solenoid to provide the secondary function.

Example:  Cement Mixer - The primary pump control (Usually the toggle, roller, buttons on the top of your right stick) provides the rotation for the auger in the bucket.  By moving the roller, toggle or pushing opposite buttons, the auger will rotate clockwise or counter clockwise.  

To operate the secondary function you would need to push one of your Aux control buttons which provides 12 volts to the solenoid and allows the oil to flow to the secondary circuit.  This would then allow the chute to open and close.

Important Note:  The secondary function requires the button to provide 12 volts but also the same pump control roller, toggles, buttons need to be operated simultaneously so that the oil is ported into the circuit.  Without oil or 12 volts nothing will happen.

Setting up a Level Best box blade on your machine.

Level best uses two sets of controls for a total of 4 solenoids.  The standard functions are up/down and angle right and angle left for controlling a slope. In addition to this, if you want to operate a laser control, you need power for the lasers to operate in either manual or auto and you need an additional switch to trigger the auto control. 

What this means is you need to have at least 5 controls plus power and ground available on your sticks for controls.  Most modern machines are capable of this but some of the controls may be an option and if you did not realize it when ordering your machine, you may not have them installed.  Every high flow machine comes with 6 controls installed but it’s the low flow machines that are the problem.  You must check your controls before you even bother trying to make this attachment work or you will be disappointed.

Here is an example of a typical Bobcat installation and how Level Best will set up your controls for you to operate the attachment.  This example shows the 14 pin configuration that can be installed from Bobcat or by using a 6014 from Skid Steer Genius.  

For this to work you must have the following in place:

• A Bobcat with a 7 pin harness installed.
• A Genius SG-6014 controller installed.
• Program the 6014 so that A1 (C) is programmed for latching.
• You must have the proper Level Best harness installed in your Box Blade.

Other Controls and How They Operate:

These instructions are relevant for the following brands of machines using this Genius harness (SG-BPH-14-7-9).  John Deere, Cat D-Series, Kubota SVL Enhanced or SSV Controls, New Holland, Gehl, Mustang.  This will NOT work on 8 pin controlled machines like Cat A/B/C series, Terex, ASV.  This will also not work on 14 pin Takeuchi or any machine that does not have 6 control buttons installed.

1: The first thing you do is to make sure your hydraulics are going the right way.  Bobcat standard forward hydraulics are backwards to almost everyone else.  For all of the manufacturers mentioned above, make sure the female coupler of the attachment is installed in the hose marked P.  If you follow the hose down to the hydraulic manifold on the attachment, the P is stamped in the block.  Next to it is the return line and it is stamped T for tank which is return.  Nothing works if you don’t do this step first. 

2: The second thing to do is to start your machine and fire up the hydraulics and see if the wheel spins on it’s own.  If it does, you will NOT be installing the green wire.  If it does not, you will need to install the green wire for the controls to operate.

3:  This is the part that is different for each machine and the controls are different for everyone.  The most important thing here is to make sure you are running the controls in pairs.  We include a color coded sheet showing you which controls do what so you can keep them in pairs.  I even like to take the first pair and move them from each stack of solenoids just to be sure everything is working. 

4: The Wheel Saw, Planer and Stump Grinder all use the same hydraulic manifold.  There are three stacks of 2 solenoids.  Use your first pair of wires and plug them in the top and bottom of the first stack.  Run the attachment and actuate the buttons.  Are you happy with the function and direction? If you want a different function, then move that pair of wires to the next set of solenoids and try again.  If you are unhappy with the direction, then move the upper wire to the lower solenoid and the lower to the upper.  It is that simple.

Once you go through this, it is always helpful to write on the solenoids, the direction and function.  Makes it easier if you ever need to troubleshoot a broken wire.

When you apply a function, if the attachment wheel slows down, then remove the green wire.  If not, leave it in place.

All of these controllers operate on the same theory.  With over a decade of experience with these controllers, we have created our hardware and loaded software into them in such a way that they will tell you what is wrong with them.

1:  When you plug the controller in and your key is on you will see an initial green LED which is proof of power.  If you do not see this LED light up of any kind of flashing, you must check the power circuit in your machine.

• Checking the power involves a test light or meter with the probes across Pin 1 & 3 in the machine connector at the end of the boom next to the hydraulic couplers.
• If no power is visible, then you will want to check your fuses first.

The JCB control box was designed as a simple 4 output controller for the simple operation of up to four solenoids.  We use a self centering joystick that is so simple to use but you should be aware of a few facts.

Attachment manufacturers use different configurations of electrical pins to control their attachments.  Independent companies will provide their customers with any configuration that they ask for but the major manufacturers will not.  That's where we run into issues.

The JCB-100 provides 4 outputs and a ground.  Most machines offer up to 6 outputs for attachment controls but in some cases, they are optional so you are never sure which ones they will connect. 

The hardest thing we had to decide when designing this controller was which pins to use.  We chose the old Bobcat standard which are E,F,G & H with B being the ground.  This was our best chance of the controller working out of the box.  Here are a couple of troubleshooting tricks that will get you up and running quickly.

The number 1 issue I have when people tell me the controller does not work is the fuses in the machines.  Please make sure you plug in the controller first.  Do you see an LED flashing?  No - place a meter across the power sockets in the machine 7 pin connector.  Do you see voltage?  No, then check the fuses and harness to be sure it is installed.  Yes, installed.  So many times I find it is not even plugged in from the factory or a service tech forgetting to plug it in.

This is one of our flagship products for Bobcat brand machines.  It works on all Bobcat machines equipped with 7 pin CAN controls after 2000.  This includes Skid Steer Loaders, Tool Cat and Telehandlers.

Troubleshooting:

There is an LED located on the back of the controller so that you can have it plugged into an attachment and watch it operate.  We installed this because our older units had no indication so people were constantly returning them when they did not work only to find out later that it was a bad fuse on their machine.

Here are the steps to go through if you suspect a problem with the controller.

What color is the LED on the controller and what is it doing?  A stuck on Amber at start-up means blown output.

1. Is the LED solid or flashing?
2. Can you cycle through each switch and get the LED to change state on each switch?
3. If everything is fine there, then use a test light across B for ground and touch each Pin E,F,G & H. 
4. Does it light without touching a button?

Yes, then you have a blown controller.  Contact us for support through our form portal.

No, then do the same thing and touch the pins while you push a button.

Can you get each output to switch on?

Yes, then you will need to check all connections on the attachment side to see if they have come loose or are damaged.

OOPS, I tore my harness apart and need to re-pin it.  Here are the specs and the pin out of the harness.

This is a single output CAN controller designed to plug into your modern Bobcat Loader, Toolcat or Telehandler.  It has one output that can be momentarily triggered or latched.  It works from your left handle UP/Down buttons closest to your left thigh.

When you start your machine, the controller will boot and check for power and bus control.  Once this is established the LED in the end of the controller will flicker to tell you it is working.  If there is no LED or it turns amber and stays amber, the power or Buca signals are missing so you must check your fuses and wire connections.  If that checks out, contact us for your next steps.

Once it is connected to your attachment, you will need to activate it as well as use your pump controller to turn the hydraulic on in either a forward or reverse direction.  The controller acts as only a selector.  For activity to happen, you also need hydraulics to cause motion.

A typical operation is operating a 6 way blade where the right toggle will move the blade left to right.  To get the blade to tip, you must hold the left button while you operate the right hand toggle so that the flow is redirected to the tip cylinders.  If you do action without the other, nothing will happen.

BUYER BEWARE!

Since I originally wrote this, these so called attachments are now on eBay and they state that they are all made with American steel.  This is false.  You do not ship American steel to China and build attachments.  

Chinese attachments are being dumped on RB Auctions in record numbers.  As of the publish dates, these are the brands.  Generally, they dump them at auctions, they don’t work so they change the brand name and start dumping again.  This is really a case of you get what you pay for.  Shame on RB for allowing this to happen!  A few items will last a while but when they blow, you will need a machine shop to manufacture the parts since companies do not exist.  If there is an address, it is fake or a mail drop.  I am putting them all on one page since most items are the same, they just have a different name stuck on them. 

These are the current names that they are using to dump these products on us.  These companies do NOT exist.  They are mail drops and phony telephone numbers to get you to buy the products from the auction.  No warranty, no support and no parts.  You are doomed if you bought any of their items.

NOTE:  These companies do not exist so don't waste your time trying to contact them because you are on your own.  All materials are China sourced so you will need to fabricate your own repairs, but hey they are cheap to buy.

Wolverine Cement Mixer - This is a copy of an American designed and manufactured Star Industries Scoop and Mix. It uses one solenoid for control of the chute.  It does not come with the hose and it is metric so you will need to make a new chute if you want a hose or find a metric hose somewhere.  The primary pump action will cause the paddles to operate.  By pushing a control button, the solenoid will fire and allow the oil to travel through the chute hoses to the cylinder.  This will only happen if you push the button and operate the hydraulics at the same time. Great Bear Cement Mixer, Suihe, etc.  You have to verify if there are two coils and then contact us because they are more complicated.  These will NOT work without electrical so don't waste your time.  CLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS.

Suihe/Land Honor/Titan Articulating Mower – This is a copy of an American designed and manufactured CID Swing Boom.  CID reports that many people are contacting them for warranty because they are falling apart.  This is not a CID product.  It is a Chinese copy.  You get what you get.  Uses 4 solenoids with 2 pin Deutsch connections – Tilt out/In and swing back and forward.

Uses 4 solenoids with Deutsch receptacles.

Functions are:

• Swing left and right – Once stack of two solenoids.
• Tilt head in and out – Second stack of two solenoids.
• Check the flow direction. Blades must spin on their own in the forward direction with your flow locked on.

• There is a mechanical issue with these where the air must be bled out of the control lines or the boom will not move. Also look for an adjustment knob on the control block to see if the swing and tilt rate can be modified.

For Cat D series the primary controls are B – Ground, C,D,E,F which are standard. If you have a low flow machine, you may be missing the buttons on the right stick next to the roller. You will need to add them or use the connections that will use pins A & J. In our BPH-14 harness, you will need to move the sockets from G to A and H to J.

Note:  This attachment is so poorly built that it has been sucking my life away as people buy a harness and want me to provide full technical support to get it going.  I will only provide enough support to prove to you that our harnesses and controllers are working.  From there, you are on your own.  I will add to this FAQ as customers inform me of each issue they have encountered and what they did to fix it.  I can tell you that you need to expect to spend some real money to get these going including buying additional parts and even an additional mower for parts since these companies do not exist.

This attachment is a widow maker.  Use at your own risk. 

Here are some of the issues that customers are having after I have proven that the harnesses/controllers work.

1: 24 volt solenoids - You will need to find replacements.

2: Bleed air out of lines or the boom will not move.

3: Leaking cartridges - Replace o-rings.

4: Blades flying off and hitting houses/cars/animals/humans.  You are on your own for this one.  Make sure you have liability insurance.

5: Replacing the lost blades.  Buy another unit.  These are custom Chinese blades.

6: Boom mechanical failure.  Either buy another unit or see a machine shop to fabricate new parts.  All pins and parts are metric.

7: Valve body malfunction.  Buy a proper valve for $2000 - $3500 on the open market or buy another unit at RB Auctions for parts.

Wolverine Products:

These products have appeared on the market mostly through online auction sites and a few minuscule backyard dealers who purchased a container through Alibaba.  The company name does not check out as an actual company and when we contacted the neighboring businesses in Colorado, we found that the building was being used as a mail drop only and that there is no Wolverine company.

We visited the factory that makes the attachments in China back in 2019 and even bought some samples.  They turned out to be a disaster so we scrapped most of them and looked elsewhere for good Chinese suppliers.  With that said, we soon started receiving many phone calls from people who bought these online from RB Auctions, Bidadoo, eBay and others.  The first attachment was the cement mixer and boy did we receive a lot of phone calls, so we went to work creating kits.  We can supply practically anything electrical for these mixers, but we cannot supply parts.  You are best to buy two mixers so that you will have parts long term because our experience was that the attachment only lasted a few hours.

This mixer works differently than the other copies that you may find out there.  They use a dual solenoid control so you can't just run hydraulic flow through it and the auger will spin.  You need to trigger the solenoid to make it spin and to make the chute open.  You will also notice the position of the solenoid.  It gets in the way of the cross bar of the quick attach locking cylinder.  You must move this solenoid before using the attachment or you will damage it.  The fact that this is their location tells me that they know nothing about skid steers and merely copied the design without knowing how it would function.

These are another Chinese auction attachment with some peculiar functions.  Instead of using 1 solenoid to control the functions, there are 4.  This means that your machine needs to have at least 4 function buttons installed which many old machines do not have.  

This is an absolute requirement because Shear Open/Close uses two functions and Grapple Open/Close uses two more.
